Lal Kot
Fortress Wall From Late Mughal Era
Description
Built by Rajput ruler Anangpal Tomar against the encroaching Muslim invaders, the dilapidated ruins of Lal Kot (also known as Qila Rai Pithora) represent the first Delhi settlement, making Mehrauli the oldest standing neighborhood of Delhi.
Scrambling through the deep jungle and up the scattered stonework, you will find yourself atop the historic wall. Following its six and a half kilometer long wall, views of Mehrauli will stretch before you, including the Qutub Minar, the Archeological Park's sites, and modern Mehrauli's rising flats and buildings. With carefully peeled ears you will hear the distinct caws of peacocks roosting in the nearby trees, and if you keep a look out, you may see one of the colorful males fly between the tree tops.
With the wildlife spread around, the memory of Mehrauli's past will come to life again, and the surrounding concrete apartment buildings will speak of the interesting intersection of past and present which defines the identity of this paradoxical neighborhood.
