Jahaz Mahal
Lodi Dynasty Building
Description
Resting a short distance from the Shamsi Talab, the Jahaz Mahal ('the Ship Palace') prepares to set sail over the historic waters.
Constructed during the Lodhi period, it has served a variety of purposes through its centuries of life. Over its lengthy history, the palace is believe to have served as a place of worship, residence for local holy man, inn for traveling pilgrims and place of monsoon respite for Delhi royalty.
Now the Jahaz Mahal serves as reminder of bygone era and is home to new life. The Phool Waalon ki Sair ('Florist Festival') springs forth every year following the end of the long summer days. Hindus, Muslims and visitors alike follow the festival's procession down Market Street, concluding their celebrations beside the Jahaz Mahal with Qawwali music and Kathak dancing.
Today, you can find families and friends gathering next to the Jahaz Mahal for casual recreation, much like the kings of old.
